The Last Painting participated in the 46th International Film Festival Rotterdam and won the Best Film Awards in the 10th Cines del Sur, an international film festival in Granada in Spain, and the Independent Spirit Awards in Los Angeles Chinese Film Festival. Meanwhile, it was also broadcasted as the opening film in 2017 Golden Horse Fantastic Film Festival. The film tells a different story regarding the politics and gender issues, reflecting the contradiction between the beauty and ugliness of human nature.

The Last Painting starts at the time before Taiwan’s presidential elections in 2016. During the time, it is easy to sense the atmosphere of political manipulation in every household, road, and lane. The boom of the Sunflower Student Movement, a social movement in Taiwan for protesting the passing of the Cross-Strait Service Trade Agreement (CSSTA) by the legislation department without clause by clause review, recedes. Meanwhile, the participating activists, who have found themselves during the process of the movement and in art and music, return to their regular lives. The main actress, a politics student, is one of the activists and tries to alter the unfair situations in Taiwan society after the movement. However, rather than confronting the world, it turns out that these teenagers discover more about themselves, especially the ugly desire.

Starting with the seven deadly sins in Christian religions, The Last Painting shows the pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and sloth of people. Nevertheless, are these sins or simply human nature? The director, Chen Hung-I, has a unique interpretation of truth. The film presents the ugly sides of sex and love, which coexist with the beauty of human nature even after our hopes are destroyed.
